1. FC Magdeburg is a German football club founded in 1965. The club has been playing in the MDCC-Arena since 2007 and has the colors blue and white. 1. FC Magdeburg became champions three times and won the national cup seven times. The FCM won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1974 and made history. After the reunification, the club missed the jump into professional football and played in the regional amateur league. In the 1989/90 season, 1. FC Magdeburg finished third in the last DDR-Oberliga season. In the 1992/93 season, the blue and whites missed the qualification for the new Regionalliga and had to play in the fourth-tier Oberliga Nordost-Nord. It wasn't until the 1996/97 season that the team got back on track and was promoted to the Regionalliga Nordost. The following year, even a promotion to the 2. Bundesliga seemed possible, but it didn't happen. In the 1999/2000 season, the team was relegated to the fourth tier again, with only the win of the Football State Cup of Saxony-Anhalt bringing some glory. In the 2000/01 season, the FCM became a sensation in the DFB-Pokal: they eliminated 1. FC Köln, FC Bayern München, and Karlsruher SC in a row, until they were finally defeated 0-1 by FC Schalke 04, the later DFB-Pokal winner, in the quarterfinals. The team managed to stay in the league, but in 2002, the club had to file for bankruptcy and was forcibly relegated from the Regionalliga. It wasn't until the 2005/06 season that the FCM, as Oberliga champions, managed to get promoted again. In 2007, the dream of professional football almost came true for the blue and whites. On the last matchday of the Regionalliga Nord, a win against FC St. Pauli was needed to get promoted to the 2. Bundesliga. But the FCM only managed a 1-1 draw and remained in the lower leagues. In 2012, the team would have had to be relegated as the last in the table, but due to a reform of the Regionalliga, they were able to stay in the league. In May 2015, the FCM became champions in the Regionalliga Nordost and subsequently won the promotion playoffs for the 3. Liga against the Regionalliga Südwest champions Kickers Offenbach. 50 years after the club's founding in 1965, the FCM made its return to professional football. 1. FC Magdeburg has a long and varied history and is still writing history. The club has produced many successful players and coaches and has a loyal fan base. The FCM is currently playing in the 2. Bundesliga and is fighting for promotion to the 1. Bundesliga.
